Wild for Ultraviolet

Every year Pantone, the world’s authority on all things color, tries to boil down all the feelings and happenings in our social and political world into one striking shade. They then release a “Color of the Year”. This color is meant to represent “one moment in time that provides strategic direction for the world of trend and design”. You may (or may not) remember, last year’s shade was Greenery, which we were very excited about. We’ve always been pro green and Greenery it was delightfully close to our signature MAK Green. We had so much fun bringing the color into our designs and playing with all its hidden meanings, we decided to do the same for this year’s color.

For 2018, Pantone selected Ultra Violet. Ultra Violet is a “dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade”, designed to communicate “originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us towards the future”.  This new color has lots of symbolism behind it- it’s the color of royalty, a representation of unique artistic spirit as shown by Prince and David Bowie, and even evocative of the ethereal cosmos. It’s a safe guess that since the unusual Greenery was picked during a very unusual year in America and the world in general, Ultra Violet was picked to express the need for optimism and creative vision when times get scary.

While we designers at MAK are certainly aware of these things, we also have a more personal connection with the color. Ultra Violet inspires fond thoughts of a favorite client and a particularly purple bathroom we designed last year.

This client, obviously a fan of Ultra Violet, wanted her bathroom to be a purple oasis. Every fixture and finish was picked to give her a beautiful space that represents a pleasant start to an early morning or the perfect end to a long day. It makes sense for that place of transitions to be infused with a sense of “the shape-shifting meaning of purple—from luxurious to radical to transcendent”

There are variety of ways to incorporate Ultra Violet in your project- as a subtle accent color, or as a bold a feature and tone setter as this bathroom has. If you are feeling the mystical pull of Ultra Violet, we’re excited to help you figure out how your home can get a little more transcendently violet. Or, perhaps you a feeling green, of blue, or slate, or…what matters most to us is that you love your space, and that you love it long after Pantone names a new “Color of the Year”.
