This house is the perfect example of when a handful of small, well-designed details come together to form a truly magnificent remodel. This was a big project to take on- a whole house transformation of a 1960’s Streng (if you’re not familiar with the Sacramento-area builders, read more about them here) home with lots of design challenges. The owners, one of whom grew up in the house, knew that they wanted to de-compartmentalize the space and allow for better flow of movement and light. They also wanted to make the home more environmentally friendly and improve its connection with the natural spaces outside. All of this had to be done while maintaining the character of the mid-century modern home. Like many of our clients, they knew what they wanted fixed, they just didn’t know how to fix it.
We can begin to see how all of these design challenges were turned into solutions particularly well in the kitchen. The previously isolated and too-small space was turned into a galley-style kitchen which maintained views to both the yard and the living areas. We did this by minimizing upper cabinetry, which allowed light to travel freely through the spaces, and creating a hidden butler’s pantry. There are a few details that set this kitchen apart, like the beautifully simple exhaust hood and the custom egg divots in the counter top. But the crowning jewel is surely the handmade stained glass window, which adds a bit more color and sparkle to the already airy space.
In terms of both form and function, the rest of the redesigned home follows suit. The owners can now comfortably entertain large groups or go about their everyday lives in a space that sticks to its roots while finding new and modern ways to shine.
