Sometimes making room is as much about knocking out as it is about punching out. For these clients, their kitchen was boxed in by an exterior wall that was recessed under extended eaves at the front of the house and an interior wall near the dining room. To make the kitchen feel less cramped and more connected, knocking out the interior wall was essential to achieving the goal of a more open, modern kitchen. With this wall gone—and additional space built under the existing roof structure—the kitchen was no longer pinned in a corner and the new design elements became the main attraction.
These elements include: a modern front door with etched glass, Velux skylights and an expanded run of windows for more natural light; Heath tiles at the backsplash and Alina Grande Pendant lights for color; and a custom island counter made of locally-harvested walnut at center stage. Other extraordinary features in the kitchen include the Kohler Stages kitchen sink has custom details and bonus features. The media center in the living room was updated to match the new design. We also gave their façade and front door a minor facelift, which helped it match its newly updated interior.
The interplay of three features: the open flow of space, the custom walnut countertop and accent shelves and an abundance of modern tech features (like the remote-controlled window coverings and under cabinet lights with a range of color options and the foot pedal for hands free faucet operation at both sinks) give the whole new space an elegant and custom feel. And, thanks to that newly missing wall, you can admire it from the living room!
