“Letting in the Light ” Contemporary Kitchen

Traditional Style, Reimagined

The goal of this downstairs remodeling project was to maintain the traditional style charm of the home while adding modern amenities. It was important to make the downstairs a peaceful place where the homeowners could unwind while also creating a space that made entertaining easy. Without adding any square footage we were able to completely reimagine the way their downstairs felt - by vaulting the ceilings, using neutral tones with rich Walnut wood accents, and connecting the rooms we were able to create a downstairs that feels unified, spacious, and inviting.

Before + After

Lighting Details

It was important to the homeowners that the new downstairs area feel lighter. This was accomplished both in terms of the materials used and the actual lighting throughout the space. MAK's designer removed unnecessary walls to create more sightlines throughout the home and allow for natural light from the north-facing windows to reach more areas of the house. By incorporating natural tones and layered lighting in addition to the natural light the remodeled home is a bright, cohesive space that feels like a retreat. The many windows and glass french patio doors create a beautiful indoor-outdoor transition between the house and the backyard. A custom ground-level deck was built and serves as a lovely space to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or watch the sunset in the evenings. The deck can be accessed by french swing doors in both the living room and the dining room.

The remodeled downstairs retains the charm of the original home but has an added elegance and continuity that shines through!

Color Story

In an early design meeting, our clients brought in a piece from their favorite dishware collection, which we used to inspire colors throughout the project. The dishware had a small accent sage green frog motif that inspired the cabinetry color. The built-in hutch now serves as a perfect display case for their dishware while also offering ample extra storage for other items.

Designing “Sage Advice”

The clients wanted to work within the existing envelope of their home but use the space more efficiently. By removing the existing peninsula and one of two pantries we were able to capture and add critical space to the kitchen. Every inch of their new cabinetry has intentional storage, making it so that the clients now have new places to store what was in the previous second pantry.
