Letting in the Light
Downstairs Remodel

Project Overview
Traditional Style Reimagined

The goal of this downstairs remodeling project was to maintain the traditional style charm of the home while adding modern amenities. It was important to make the downstairs a peaceful place where the homeowners could unwind while also creating a space that made entertaining easy. Without adding any square footage we were able to completely reimagine the way their downstairs felt - by vaulting the ceilings, using neutral tones with rich Walnut wood accents, and connecting the rooms we were able to create a downstairs that feels unified, spacious, and inviting.

Before After

Working with the MAK group is like working with your friends and they get the job done. From the start, Ken Kirsch and his team were very professional first exploring our interests and desires... then coming up with a detailed plan and time frame MAK uses a nice online tool, BuilderTrend, for handling all matters of the project so you can see updates regularly... The MAK team were lovely folks to work with. Very easy to work with. The finished job is outstanding!

Design Analysis
Lighting Details

It was important to the homeowners that the new downstairs area felt lighter both in terms of the materials used and the actual lighting throughout the space. Keeping this in mind MAK's designer was able to eliminate unnecessary walls to create more sightlines throughout the home and allow for natural light from the north-facing windows to reach more areas of the house. By incorporating natural tones and layered lighting in addition to the natural light the remodeled home is a bright, cohesive space that feels like a retreat. The many windows and glass french patio doors create a beautiful indoor-outdoor transition between the house and the backyard. A custom ground-level deck was built and serves as a lovely space to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or watch the sunset in the evenings. The deck can be accessed by french swing doors in both the living room and the dining room.

The remodeled downstairs retains the charm of the original home but has an added elegance and continuity that shines through!
