Space Analysis
The new owners of this neglected and outdated 1960’s home hired MAK to update and modernize the whole home and kitchen. The space was dark, limited in size, and suffered from a poorly designed and cramped layout that inhibited the new owners from entertaining and living efficiently in the space. The homeowners wanted to create a larger and more light-filled interior that was modern but respected the historical context of the home. They also wanted to create an open layout that flowed seamlessly, allowing for social interaction and entertaining.

Customization
MAK transformed this home by extensively remodeling the interior and exterior. MAK designed and built a small addition that created an open and bright dining room adjacent to the fully remodeled kitchen. The load bearing walls were also removed to create a spacious and light-filled great room, allowing the space to flow effortlessly and efficiently- ideal for entertaining and daily life. Modern finishes were selected to create a clean and functional aesthetic while honoring the 1960’s era of design that this home was founded upon. The master bathroom and bedroom were also remodeled to create a modern, usable space that matched the design aesthetic of the rest of the home.
Exterior Design
New Living
On the exterior of the home, the rooflines and sightlines to and from the yard were modernized and portions of the exterior were finished with a smooth, acrylic stucco. Original redwood siding was harvested from the former envelope to patch and unify the remaining facade. The existing roof structures were demolished to create simple, flat roof planes, harmonizing with the streamlined and modern aesthetic of the home. The space is now livable, energized, and light- a modernized 1960’s era home with an updated, playful aesthetic!
