Not Everything is Black and White
Before + After
The Program
The clients for this project came to us wanting to reimagine the heart of their home - the family room, dining area, kitchen and laundry room. They wanted to take their kitchen in a modern direction while keeping their existing flooring. As avid cooks, the new design had to increase the functionality of their kitchen without changing the footprint and marry the traditional flooring with their contemporary preferences. The clients also wanted to update their laundry room which was off of the kitchen. Through the use of black walnut accents, black and white materials, and contemporary design the four spaces harmonize to create an integrated, entirely new heart of this home.

Space For Every Need
One of the homeowners is on the shorter side, so we prioritized storing daily-use items in the lower cabinets as part of the cabinetry design. To ensure easy access to the upper cabinets, we incorporated a clever solution: a hidden storage slot in the kitchen island for a step stool. This allows the homeowner to quickly retrieve the step stool to reach items in the taller cabinets and conveniently store it back in its dedicated space when not in use.
A Place to Relax
The living room is anchored by a sleek black stone fireplace framed by a built-in media console and floating Black Walnut shelves, perfect for displaying family photos and mementos. The black stone fireplace surround echoes the glossy black backsplash tile in the kitchen, without matching exactly.
Suddenly, Laundry Isn’t So Bad
Prior to the remodel, the laundry room was crowded, without adequate countertop space for folding, and hard-to-reach upper cabinetry that was underutilized, due to its inaccessibility. By changing the cabinetry layout we were able to stack the washer and dryer, create more lower storage, and add countertop space. The new laundry room also has an integrated laundry drop area and hamper in the cabinetry, freeing up valuable aisle space in the narrow room. The new laundry room is a beautiful extendtion of the home, somewhere our clients no longer dread but enjoy!
We hired MAK Design to remodel our house. They did a super professional job from start to finish. Their designer, Kelli, immediately understood my vision and made the process of selecting materials and colors very easy and smooth. The different people working in the house were always polite, respectful and responsive to every request. Their project managers, Spencer and Brian, managed the project smoothly checking and rechecking everything to make sure that the work was done to our satisfaction. They isolated the work area and kept a very clean work environment throughout the process with minimal disruption. Everything turned out beautifully and we are very pleased with the aesthetics of the house. We keep getting compliments from our guests. I highly recommend them and will definitely hire them again in the future.
