Custom Outdoor Spaces for Shade, Connection, and Year-Round Living
The best outdoor spaces are places with a purpose: a shaded table for long dinners, a quiet pavilion in the garden, a screened-in porch that catches the evening light, or a pool house that becomes as useful on an ordinary Tuesday as it is during a party.
MAK Design + Build creates custom outdoor living spaces for homeowners in Davis, Sacramento, Woodland, Winters, and the nearby communities. We begin by understanding how you want the space to feel, what you want to do there, and what currently keeps you from using your yard more.
That means looking beyond the structure itself. We consider sun and shade, privacy, views, circulation, architecture, materials, maintenance, and the relationship between the house and the landscape. MAK’s artist-influenced story shapes the way we think about composition, proportion, light, and detail. Our construction knowledge ensures those ideas are durable, buildable, and aligned with your budget.

Types Of Outdoor Spaces We Build in Davis and Sacramento
You may know that the patio is too hot, the backyard feels disconnected from the house, or there is nowhere comfortable to gather after the sun moves across the yard. Our job is to listen closely, study your property, and find the best solution.

Our Process
We Meet
Whole house remodeling in Sacramento starts with careful listening. We talk through what feels disconnected, what has changed in your life, and what the home needs to support now. From there, we study the house, the scope, the budget, and the priorities before shaping a design agreement that gives the work a clear and thoughtful path forward.
We Design
Our design team looks at the home as a whole, not as a collection of separate rooms. We consider flow, light, storage, structure, materials, and the way each space relates to the next. The goal is a design that feels personal, buildable, and cohesive from the first sketch to the final finish.
Frequently Asked Questions About Outdoor Living Spaces
How much does an outdoor living space cost in Davis or Sacramento?
MAK’s custom outdoor structures generally fall between $80,000 and $300,000. Projects involving conditioned space, extensive utilities, difficult site conditions, highly customized construction, or a broader backyard transformation may require a larger investment.
You’ll find more information in our Cost Guide. We also discuss your budget early in the process so we design your project within those parameters.
What types of outdoor projects does MAK build?
MAK designs and builds custom gazebos, garden pavilions, pergolas, patio covers, pool houses, detached studios, screened porches, three-season rooms, decks, patios, outdoor kitchens, and larger exterior transformations.
Does MAK build patio covers in Davis?
Yes. We design and build custom patio covers in Davis. Each one is thoughtfully planned around your home, yard, sun exposure, architectural style, and how you want to use the space. Because our work is fully custom, we don't install prefabricated patio covers.
Can MAK design a Japanese gazebo?
Yes. Our “Once in a Moon Window” project shows how traditional Japanese design can inspire a structure that still feels personal and at home in its surroundings. We can draw inspiration from your home, garden, artwork, family history, or other meaningful details while also planning for shade, shelter, durability, and year-round use.
Will my outdoor structure require a permit?
It depends on the size, design, and features of your project, as well as local requirements. Covered or enclosed structures, and those attached to your home or equipped with plumbing or electrical systems, often need permits, engineering, or both.
MAK will identify what’s required and coordinate those details during the design-build process so everything is in place before construction begins.
Does MAK handle both design and construction?
Yes. Design and construction are part of every MAK project. Our designers and builders work together from the beginning, creating one connected process from the first ideas through the finished space.
Because of this, we don’t take on construction-only projects based on plans created by another architect or designer. We’re happy to review ideas or concepts you’ve already explored, but the final design will be developed through MAK’s design-build process.

“The way of MAK is quality, transparency, and efficiency. With MAK, they helped achieve our vision of updating our almost 100 year old home to exude a more modern presence while still maintaining some of its old, good bones. It was our first time ever doing this type of thing and every step of the way we felt confident and comfortable that MAK was doing right on our behalf. The culture that Ken, and likely others, have crafted at MAK is truly amazing and refreshing in this day-in-age. Every employee is gracious, courteous and smiling. From our perspective as the client, the bankroll, it is easy to state that we were treated as first-class citizens . But even more marvelous to see was how positively MAK interacted with the community, neighbors, and sub-contractors. The MAK culture is firmly present from within but emanates to those around which, for us, produces a better product.”

Whole House, Central Davis“We thoroughly enjoyed working with the MAK team on our garage conversion in Davis. Every single team member showed a commitment to quality and transparency, and they were all very respectful and pleasant. We never had to worry about the overall quality of the work because our project manager was on site every day to make sure every aspect of the build was taken care of. We also enjoyed working with the design team and appreciated their guidance. We ended up with an airy and modern looking multi-use room and beautiful bathroom that fits our personal style! The team even helped us problem solve a unique storage solution that made up for the loss of our garage. We plan to use this team again for our upcoming kitchen and second bath remodel.”

Garage Conversion, Central Davis“We have been entirely enjoying our renovated kitchen, flooring, and other areas of the house that MAK Design + Build helped us conceptualize and enact. Working with their design team was easy and inspiring, and their construction workers were unfailingly helpful and accommodating. Equally importantly, MAK stands behind their work, making corrections when needed. We have enjoyed recommending MAK to others who similarly seek a renewal of their place to live.”

Kitchen, North Davis
MAK is the best! Our renovation project involved a complete gutting & re-do of the foyer, kitchen, dining room, family room and laundry/mudroom (over 1,000 sf). This was the largest remodel we had ever done. On past projects we had encountered the ‘usual’ contractor problems and cost overruns. We were nervous about having the same issues on a much larger project. We really needed a company that could handle the day-to-day issues without us.
Everyone involved on the project, from Ken the owner, to all the subcontractors were very friendly and easy to work with. Our project was completed on time, on budget and we loved the outcome! We will continue using MAK for a smaller Phase II project involving French doors. We wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone, with no hesitation — great people, excellent work ethic, high integrity with outstanding results.
