Three Seasons

The Program

The goal of this project was to create a separate outdoor space that would extend the living area and allow the homeowners to enjoy the backyard while being protected from the elements. A Three-Season porch was the perfect solution. The porch floods with natural light throughout the day then is illuminated by the black pendant lights along with recessed can lighting throughout at night.

Where Every Hour is Happy Hour

The entire space is west-facing, it is the perfect place to unwind after a long day, and enjoy the show the sky puts on each evening as the golden hour light floods in. The bonus of a Three-Season porch like this in California is that the temperate weather means the space can be enjoyed nearly year-round.

As ceramicists and avid birdwatchers, the homeowners wanted the porch to also serve as a potential studio space where the sights and sounds of the garden could be enjoyed. To accommodate the kiln, it was important the addition included a power source which was incorporated into the design by utilizing retractable floor outlets. The screened windows protect the space from weather and insects while also making the porch breathable by allowing airflow throughout. Form and function were both very important for this space which is why the entire porch is weathertight which means the entire space can be power washed, including the decking with the retractable outlets. Additionally, the screens are independent of the beams attached through a track-mounted system which allows the screens to be easily removed if they ever need to be cleaned or tightened.

“We hired MAK Design + Build to change the footprint of our house and add a screen porch. Business owner Ken Kirsch was amazing at helping us distill the project. Designer Anthony Anderson’s design for the porch is so cool... he added things that really elevate the room and draw us out every sunny day. Project Manager Brian Krall was easy to have around. We have never had anyone work on our house with such an attention to detail as Brian. A+++ and extra credit points all around.”
