Lead Carpenter

John

John began his carpentry career in Minneapolis, renovating century-old homes and building custom cabinetry for architect-designed projects. For two decades, he grew his carpentry and woodworking experience, and broadened his view of projects to include site supervision.
John holds a California General B License and studied carpentry and cabinet making at Minnesota State Southeast Technical College in Red Wing, Minnesota. He also completed bicycle frame-building training at the United Bicycle Institute in Ashland, Oregon.
At MAK, John’s favorite part of the work is collaborating with talented designers and tradespeople who share his belief that details matter. He enjoys contributing to projects where thoughtful craftsmanship and careful coordination make a meaningful difference in the process and the finished space. He and his incredible expertise are a critical part of the production team.

Outside of work John enjoys cycling and generally being active outside, and international travel (hence the passport in his desk photo).

  • I’m picking sleep no matter what time it is.

  • Luke Skywalker. It wasn't a viable career path however.

  • Playing hockey. Growing up in Minnesota we had an outdoor hockey rink 4 blocks from our house. Every winter day after school I would grab my skates and hockey stick and walk to the rink and play pick up games until they shut the lights at 6 PM for dinner. They turned the lights back on at 7 until 9 so after dinner I would walk back up to the rink and play some more. On weekends I'd be there most of the day. My mom would sometimes stop by with a warm drink and a snack.

  • Bill Murray, Tom Waits, and Iggy Pop.

  • Hard to pick a favorite, but it might be Radiohead. Every album is a masterpiece.
